Funding first-of-a-kind fusion power projects

22 September 2026 · 4:00pm - 7:15pm · New York

Fusion's financing challenge changes once the machine works. The question shifts from funding technology development to funding a first-of-a-kind power station whose long-term operating characteristics remain largely unknown. That challenge fits neither venture capital nor conventional project finance. The capital required exceeds venture equity limits, while construction and operating risks sit beyond what debt markets will accept at reasonable cost. The technology also isn't proven or standardised enough for conventional utility financing. The result is a classic commercialisation valley of death.
